These past few weeks have been kind of slow with our project because we had some setbacks. We have been working on our second lesson for a few weeks now and we are almost done with it. We are looking forward to next semester so we can go back and go to new classes to show our new lesson. We are also excited for the spring semester so we can go back and go outside to do activities and exercises.
Like I mentioned earlier, we have had some setbacks, one of them was communication with others. We have had to wait awhile for others to respond. Last week we were heading out the door to go to a lesson and Jordan, my partner, got an e-mail saying that the teacher had to reschedule the lesson, it was seven minutes before the lesson started. That really messed us up because we had scheduled that hour for her class and now we did not have any time to plan another lesson. We know that these things happen so we tried to not let it ruin our progress. We are preparing for other lesson for next semester and ready to start off strong again and schedule lessons.

This week we continued with F.U.N. health education and we made some changes and additions. We wants to keep it fun and exciting by making changes and returning to classes with more activities. The kids we taught this week were very interactive! They asked questions and shared what they had learned. We also went back to a classroom that we had taught before and we played a Kahoot that we had recently made. The game was a little harder for them since it had been a few weeks since they had learned the information. We got to learn what information they remembered and what we needed to go over again. We will continue to go to different classrooms every week and return to some to show them more activitesThis week we continued our education project with another elementary class. We went to New Palestine Elementary to teach a 5th grade class. The 5th graders received it well and engaged a lot with the activities. They asked well though-out questions and told us information they learned. Since they were a little older we could ask more advanced questions than we could have with 3rd graders. We are glad the teachers and kids are allowing us to take this time to teach them about health and fitness and its importance. We will continue this progress and maybe build onto what we have so we can return to the classrooms with more information and activity. We also want to go back to the classrooms in the spring time to do larger and fitness activities outside. Making progress and planning more classrooms to visit is our next step with F.U.N. Health Education.
So far I have done lesson outing and it went smoothy. Jordan and I divided out what we were going to day and the activities we planned on doing that day. We do the lesson and small activities with them one day then we come back and doing exercises and read to them another day. The kids seemed to really enjoy it and were excited to hear that we were coming back. I am so happy that they really got into it and asked a lot of questions. They were wanting to learn more about healthy options and know what they are eating.
I am excited to go back and see how they do with the exercises and books we are planning to show them. Jordan and I knew kids spent a lot of time with screens but going to the classroom and hearing about the kids' daily habits really confirmed that. I think they are going to really benefit from these lesson plans and activities. I also think the teachers will follow up with them and see how they are changing their habits. We are excited to venture out to more classrooms and show them our lesson. We are contacting more teachers and trying to see what time works for both of our schedules. We are hoping the word spreads about our mission and more teachers will invite us to come talk with their class. Cannot wait to see where this goes! Our project has been well received from teachers and kids already! Most of what we proposed on pitch day is what we have been doing and it all has fallen into place and is working. The teachers like the message and the kids have been having fun with it. I have done it once at Sugar Creek Elementary and it went well and we are going to return sometime soon to do more activities with them. We could fix some little things to improve it and make it flow better. I have learned a lot from doing this project from researching about it to listening to what the kids have to say about it.
Many kids today have too much access to a screen and get their entertainment from that. There are over 12 million kids that are obese and if they were more educated about what they're eating we can change that. We want kids to be active and some schools are taking away more and more recess time which causes them to be less active and can lead to being overweight. We want to travel to schools to explain the importance of recess and being active.
Kids can spend around 7 hours a day looking at a screen. We want them to get off their screen and get outside to be active. We hope to teach them new things they can do to be active. Our word for our mission is F.U.N. which stands for fitness, understanding, and nutrition. We want kids to know the importance of eating and being physically healthy. With the world today and most of our entertainment now is from a screen, we want to bring recess and simple activities back. We love being active and we want to bring that joy to others too. We also believe that nutrition is an important part of our lives and we need to make sure we are intaking all of the nutrients our bodies need. I'm excited to see the results and how the kids react to it! |
